The Robert J. Bernard Biological Field Station (BFS), located just north of Foothill Blvd. between North Mills Ave. and North College Ave. (GPS info: latitude 34.1 N x longitude 117.7 W, elevation ~1185 feet), is composed of several different plant communities, which include: coastal sage scrub (36.4 acres), alluvial fan sage scrub (22 acres), southern coast live oak riparian forest (7 acres), southern cottonwood-willow riparian forest (1.8 acres) and non-native grassland (15.2 acres) (Recon, 1995). Indicative plant species are used for naming specific ecological communities. There are also developed areas occurring on BFS, as well as artificial vernal pools and an artificial lake, “pHake Lake”.
