Application

To begin the application process, fill out a Participant Application Cover Sheet online by following the prompts and, when you’re finished, clicking the “submit” button. Be sure to print out a copy of the cover sheet to add to your application packet should you decide to apply.

Note that filling out a cover sheet is not the same thing as applying. A full application consists of the following: 1) the completed application cover sheet; 2) a detailed résumé, curriculum vitae, or brief biography; and 3) two letters of recommendation; and 4) an application essay.

The most important part of the application is the essay, which should include any relevant personal and academic information; your reasons for applying to this particular project; your interest, both intellectual and personal, in the topic; your qualifications to do the work of the project and to make a contribution to it; what you hope to accomplish by your participation, including any individual research and writing projects; and the relation of the study to your teaching.

Your two referees may be from inside or outside your home institution. They should be familiar with your professional accomplishments and promise, your teaching and/or research interests, and your ability to contribute to and benefit from participation in the seminar. If you are a graduate student, you should secure a letter from a professor or advisor. Please ask your referees to sign across the seal on the back of the envelope containing the letter. Enclose the letters with your application.

Your completed application must be postmarked no later than March 1, 2012, and should be addressed as follows:

Professor Kevin J. H. Dettmar
NEH Ulysses Summer Seminar
Department of English
Pomona College
140 W. Sixth Street
Claremont, California 91711

A selection committee comprised of the seminar directors and two additional colleagues with expertise in the field of modernist studies will review applications. The selection committee will primarily be concerned with the quality and scope of the applicants’ proposed research projects and the likely impact of the seminar on their teaching, but will also aim to gather a group representing a range of academic fields and teaching responsibilities. Those who are accepted will be notified by telephone on April 2 and asked to give their response by April 6.

Note: once you have accepted an offer to attend any NEH Summer Program (Summer Seminar, Institute, or Landmarks Workshop), you may not accept an additional offer or withdraw in order to accept a different offer.
