We are aware that Harvey Mudd students have a requirement to do a concentration in some area in the Humanities, Social Sciences, and the Arts (HSA). We are also aware that linguistics is an attractive HSA concentration for many HMC students. We do not keep up to date with those requirements, but we do have some relevant thoughts for HMC students on the matter.
We enjoy having HMC students in our classes, but it is important for HMC students to know that it can be quite difficult to complete an HSA concentration in linguistics. Intro to Linguistics is a challenge for many students to get into because it is in high demand, and even if you are able to take Intro to Linguistics, the department necessarily prioritizes Linguistics and Cognitive Science majors in its higher-level courses. These factors together mean that HMC students who are not Linguistics majors will have a difficult time getting into the courses they want/need to complete an HSA concentration in linguistics.
