Transferring Course Credit from Study Abroad or Other US Institutions

To get major credit for a course taken elsewhere, you need to petition the LGCS department using this LGCS petition form.

The coordinator of your major will reply by email once the department has made a decision, and that email exchange serves as the documentation of the petition decision. We encourage you to discuss your course plans with an advisor or with your major coordinator before enrolling in the courses.

NOTE: Approvals from the department only affect whether a course counts towards a major. Departments have no ability to arrange for non-Claremont courses to count as credits towards graduation, or to affect how many credits are transferred in per class; these questions are the purview of the registrar at your respective college.

Preliminary approval may be given for courses taken elsewhere (e.g. study abroad) if you have information about the course ahead of time, but final decisions about approval will be made after the course has been completed. Please retain all of your course materials so that they can be reviewed.

What major requirements can I satisfy elsewhere?

      • Linguistics: The standard practice in Linguistics is to allow courses from elsewhere (including study abroad) to count towards requirement #6 of the major (“three additional courses” in linguistics).
      • Cognitive Science: Courses from elsewhere (including study abroad) can potentially count for any of the major requirements depending on the justification made in the form.
