Anti-Racist Resources in Linguistics

Link to Google Doc: Anti-Racist Resources in Linguistics

Anti-blackness, racism, and prejudices of all sorts are encoded in our language systems and in our language use. And because language knowledge is (often) unconscious knowledge, we may well not be aware of the biases and prejudicial assumptions that show up in our own language.

This state of affairs is well known to linguists, but we still have much to learn about ourselves in these regards. However, this is much less well known to non-linguists.

The document linked here (Anti-Racist Resources in Linguistics) was created in response to the call from the Claremont Colleges’ Department of Africana Studies to investigate and fight anti-blackness at our colleges. Our goal is to aggregate existing resources that can serve to educate our department faculty, staff, and students, but which also can be made accessible to our broader college community (and beyond).
