A newly discovered microbe from the mud volcanoes – a sulfur reducing, highly salt tolerant thermophile (grows at 75 C). 1000X magnification.
This new species of Thermotoga is also from the mud volcanoes, which are ejecting fluids from the deep hot biosphere, giving us a view into this extreme envrionment.
More cells of this new Thermotoga species, which has an unusually long “toga” (sheath). Each toga contains 2-3 or more cells, and while this species also grows at 75 C, it is salt-sensitive.
