Since its inception in the 1880’s, Claremont has been a city which has maintained its concern for the surrounding natural resources which are a valuable part of its heritage. However, like the mountains, the land itself has steadily succumbed to the onslaught of development ever since the advent of European man, and the city is presently experiencing another period of rapid developmental growth similar to the one which occurred in the 1960’s. Large numbers of housing tracts are now under construction in the northeast corner of the city, an area which harbors most of the city’s native flatland flora, the coastal sage scrub community.
