The Dynamics of Bewick’s Wren Nesting.

This is a study of the nesting behavior of local Bewick’s Wren (Thryomanes bewickii). The purpose is to discover whether the population of this species is limited by nest sites and how a population potentially limited by this resource is affected by the addition of nest boxes. My study areas were the Rancho Santa Ana Botanical Garden and the Robert J. Bernard Biological Station of the Claremont Colleges. In the fall I censused the resident Bewick’s Wren populations in both areas in order to compare the numbers I obtained then to observations made in the spring after having put nest boxes up in the experimental area, the Biological Station. The Botanic Garden was my control area. Changes in population were observed over the course of the study. These changes and explanations for them are presented.
