LGCS Alumni Pathways

We are working on posting our first interviews during Summer 2020; this resource will grow over time.

Alums from both the Linguistics major and the Cognitive Science major end up in a vast array of different careers; some of those careers are directly related to their majors in college, others not. Either way, it is clear that former students do quite well professionally after graduating. That said, there is very little direct pre-professional training at Pomona College (and the other 5Cs), meaning that the transition to post-college life, finding your first job, and finding your career are all often overwhelming and stressful. It is quite common (and understandable) for students to come to professors seeking career advice; we think that our alums are in fact much better people to be seeking advice from, because they have gone through the same transition that you are about to, or that you are currently undergoing.

It is for this reason that we are building a collection of transcribed interviews where our alums have told us about their pathways out of Claremont. These are not to give you direct guidance, but rather to show you the kinds of careers people end up with and the highly variable pathways that people take from Claremont to their current careers.

If you are a current Claremont Colleges student, you can locate these narratives at the Sakai site noted above. If you are interested in interviewing an  LGCS alum personally (either for your own edification, or to contribute to our transcribed interviews) please contact Elizabeth Contreras. If you are an alum and want to add your experiences to help our other students, please contact us as well!
