Notes from Linguistics and Cognitive Science Q&A on Zoom

Linguistics and Cognitive Science Q&A Zoom
July 14th 2020

What follows are notes taken by Derrick Nguyen (edited slightly by Michael Diercks). Questions were posed by students in attendance, answers from Lise Abrams and Michael Diercks.

Important Information

      • As of July 14th, by the end of the week there will be a General Website update regarding broad structures in the department and classroom that will be announced. Please take a look and reach out if you have any questions. (update: the site is live, lgcs.us)
      • The current official policy under Pomona College is that we are not allowed to employ non full time students in Fall 2020.
      • For the Fall semester since it is remote, we will be looking at Liaisons for guidance on how to build community through the web. But if anyone has any ideas please reach out!

Should I reach out to individual professors to see how the classes will be structured?

Still in the process of finalizing details; structure of each class will be up to each individual professor and so class structures will vary a lot between classes. There will be a broad structure guideline released at the end of the week on a general website update, so after receiving that if you have any more questions you may want to reach out to your professor? Otherwise there is no need. Continue reading “Notes from Linguistics and Cognitive Science Q&A on Zoom”

Fall 2020 Cog Sci Courses

Hi all,

If you are like me, you find it challenging each semester to figure out all the cog sci courses being offered and how they count toward the cog sci major. Thus, Elizabeth and I have put together the attached lists of courses for Fall 2020 that meet requirements in cog sci, and we have laid them out both in the old curriculum and the new curriculum I described yesterday.  You can also find these lists on my cog sci website:

Hope this is helpful to you as you plan your fall courses!

Post-Bac Opportunities 3/25/20

Hi all,

I hope you are settling into your new locations and new routines.  Lots of adjustment for all of us, that’s for sure.

For those of you graduating and still looking for jobs, some more post-bac opportunities have come to my attention (download PDF). A fun aside: Arielle Borovsky, who is advertising one of these positions, was an undergraduate who worked with me many years ago, and I supervised her senior thesis.

Also, below are a few miscellaneous things that may be of interest to some of you: Continue reading “Post-Bac Opportunities 3/25/20”

Upper Division CS Courses

Hi all,

If you are pursuing the CS subconcentration within the cog sci major and are hoping to take any of their upper division courses (CSCI 101, 151, and 159 are the ones that count toward cog sci) in Fall, please note the following:

  1. You MUST fill out the survey that the CS department distributed for pre-pre enrollment.  I believe the survey ends sometime tomorrow.
  2. In the comments section, indicate that you are a cog sci major.  This is really important because without that acknowledgement, the odds of getting into the course are close to nil.  Even with the acknowledgment, there is no guarantee, but it might help.
  3. Do NOT tell them that you need that course to graduate because technically that isn’t true; any of these courses are not requirements per se, and they know that.
  4. Let me know if you are hoping to take one of the courses and which one(s).  You can also tell me why it’s imperative for you to get into the course (what’s the rationale).  This way, when CS reaches out to me, I can say that I knew about your interest in the course and can advocate on your behalf.

Thanks,

Lise
